As you age, it is common to experience noticeable changes in your body. For example, your teeth may become worn, brittle, or lost due to age, decay, or gum disease. But when it comes to replacing them, is there a such thing as being “too old”? While many patients have relied on dentures over the years, dental implants are a durable, natural-looking, and longer-lasting alternative to restore lost teeth. Here’s what you need to know about rejuvenating your smile at any age with these innovative prosthetics!

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements that are implanted into the jawbone via a titanium post. Because they are secured into the bone, they cannot be removed by the patient, so they are more durable and longer-lasting than prosthetics like dentures, and even dentist-removable options like bridges.

Your dental implants consist of three parts: the crown (tooth), the abutment (where the tooth attaches to the implant) and the dental implant itself. The crown and abutment can be removed and replaced by your dentist if damaged, however this is not common with proper care and usage.

Am I too Old for Dental Implants?

The great thing about dental implants is that nearly anyone can get them. If your mouth is in good condition, you’re likely a good candidate. If you have any oral health problems present in your mouth, you will need to treat them before you can get dental implants (gum disease, bone deterioration, etc.) but otherwise, if you are an adult who is missing one or more permanent teeth, you can benefit from this dynamic treatment.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

In addition to being permanent, your dental implants have many benefits that can help you at any age. These include:

  • They prevent bone deterioration
  • They allow you to eat a full, nutritious diet
  • They are easier to clean and care for than dentures
  • They don’t need to be removed to soak overnight like dentures
  • They don’t need to be replaced every five to ten years like dentures and bridges

Remember, dental implants are a valuable, effective treatment for patients of any age, and when it comes to restoring the form and function of your smile, there’s no such thing as being too old!
